Grace sure enough my engine gave way outside a town called grace south alabama one late night on the road the stars consumed the sky as i pulled off surprised to see the signal on my single cell phone and the stars bore silent witness to my cars exhausted coughs until we all decided it was probably better off in grace, grace the night I got lost and found myself just out of grace they sent a real big truck, driver seemed nice enough held out his meaty hand and helped me climb inside i was both awed and stunned tos ee my first real gun which he grabbed quickly and shoved somewhere out of sight he mumbled, it gets dangerous around these parts at night, i offered him a cigarette and asked him for a light he told me a joke that i already knew we told each other secrets the way that strangers sometimes do in grace, grace the night i got lost and found myself on a ride to grace grace, grace. grace, grace grace and when they say alabama: the stars fell on like the license plates around me do they mean every night cuz i learned i could find beneath the stars that night comfort in an unfamiliar face in grace now from my lofty perch on crowded new england earth i think from time to time about my night in grace the chances we dont take the choices we cant make a conversation that might have never taken place except for that one late night on the way to grace grace grace grace the night I got lost and found myself one starry night far away in grace
info:
Most of this happened. I dont smoke, but there is a town called Grace, in Alabama. The license plates do say, 'Alabama: The Stars Fell On,' and yes, I did almost sit on the pistol of a friendly truck driver who had to tow me 100 miles in a semi on a starry southern night (his name was Dwayne).
What I love most about the album version of this song is the vocal harmony on the bridge (from the mind of Will Robertson) and the fact that my family is heard clapping on the bridge and last chorus.
